Land Rover Unveils Defender 90 V8 Softop Restomod With Whopping Pricetag
This two-door, two-seat Defender 90 V8 Soft Top costs nearly as much as Ferrari’s own two-door, two-seat Roma, but this is touted to go anywhere, better than anything that has ever worn its moniker before it.

Land Rover Classic has pulled the canvas back on one of its most iconic configurations, announcing the return of the Defender V8 Soft Top—an open-air tribute to the legendary NAS 90 and other classic soft-tops that helped cement the Defender’s cult status. This reimagined legend arrives as part of the brand’s Works Bespoke programme and brings with it the sort of charm, grunt, and go-anywhere attitude Land Rover claims only a V8-powered Defender can deliver.
Each Classic Defender V8 Soft Top starts life as an original short-wheelbase Defender 90, produced between 2012 and 2016, and is then lovingly reengineered at Land Rover Classic’s facilities in Coventry or Essen. At its core, the Soft Top packs Land Rover’s 5.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol V8, churning out 405 hp (298 kW) and 515 N.m of torque, sent to all four wheels via a slick ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. This enables it to complete the 0–60 mph time in just 5.6 seconds

The performance is backed by uprated Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs and anti-roll bars, and Alcon four-piston brakes. Visually, the canvas hood can be had in multiple shades, namely Black, Sand, Dark Khaki and Navy – this is a modern interpretation of the soft-top fitted to the final Defenders in 2016. Side and rear sections can be rolled up safari-style, and buyers can also opt for a minimalist “Bikini Hood” that covers only the front passengers.

Coming in at £195 000 (or around R5 million), personalisation is fortunately top of the agenda. With 49 paint options (and a match-to-sample service), a choice of 16- or 18-inch wheels, a range of five monotone and eight duo-tone leather interior options, and accessories from wine coolers to surfboard racks, each Soft Top is essentially a one-off, built to the owner’s vision.

Every unit is assembled to OEM standards by Land Rover Classic’s dedicated team and includes a one-year, unlimited mileage warranty. While Land Rover has previously dabbled in high-end Defender V8 restomods, including the 2018 Works V8 and the Trophy and Islay Editions, the return of the Soft Top will provide open-air thrills for future buyers, unlike ever before.
