The Indian manufacturer has just announced a record-breaking March, shifting an impressive 2 253 vehicles over the course of the month and reflecting a whopping surge of over 600 units from the previous month. This milestone not only marks their entry into the coveted 2 000-unit-per-month club but also propels them to the eighth-largest vehicle manufacturer in the country, a remarkable ascent just two months after breaking into the top ten.
According to Naamsa, Mahindra’s consistent growth has propelled it to the eighth spot among South Africa’s top vehicle manufacturers, just two months after entering the top ten. Over the past financial year, Mahindra has also set a new sales benchmark, delivering 15 088 vehicles. A closer look at the numbers highlights Mahindra’s rapid expansion. In March alone, the brand recorded its highest-ever monthly sales for SUVs (1 000 units) and bakkies (1 256 units). The Scorpio-N SUV also had a personal best month, with 145 units sold. Mahindra suggests that these figures prove it is gaining traction among both individual buyers and businesses, challenging long-established competitors.
The new Mahindra XUV 3XO has also demonstrated a positive sales trend, indicating its growing popularity. In March, Mahindra sold 774 units of the XUV 3XO, marking an increase from the 656 units sold in the preceding month of February. This consistent rise in sales figures suggests that the XUV 3XO is resonating well with buyers and contributing to Mahindra’s overall strong performance in the market.

Unlike some brands that rely heavily on fleet sales, the majority of Mahindra’s vehicles are purchased by individuals. Mahindra add that this shift indicates growing trust in the brand’s offerings, particularly in the affordable SUV and bakkie segments, where Mahindra competes with competitive pricing and solid reliability.

Beyond sales, Mahindra is strengthening its presence in South Africa. The company recently broke ground on a new manufacturing facility at the Dube Tradeport in Durban, which will replace its current plant and boost production to over 1 000 units per month. It has also expanded its parts distribution and training operations with a new warehouse in Midrand, Gauteng, doubling its storage capacity.
Looking ahead, Mahindra has signed an agreement with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to explore a fully-fledged vehicle manufacturing plant for completely knocked-down (CKD) vehicles. The company is also considering local production of electric vehicle components, hinting at long-term ambitions in the region.
