Along with dozens of other concepts and experimental cars, MG took to the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show to unveil one of its latest entrants to the SUV market. It is called the Cyber X and it is a bold entry into the compact electric SUV segment for the Chinese automaker. MG has added that this will be the second model in MG’s “Cyber” series, following the Cyberster roadster, but unlike its compact coupe counterpart, this borrows retro design cues.

Penned by Veyron designer Jozef Kaban, the Cyber X has been imbued with a boxy silhouette reminiscent of classic off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender. A nod to the past, one of the most standout features are the pop-up headlights which include a full-width LED light bar. The SUV measures approximately 4.3 meters in length, placing it at the upper end of the small SUV segment. Underpinning the Cyber X is SAIC Motor’s new E3 electric platform, which incorporates “cell-to-body” battery integration. What makes this notework is its design, which enhances structural rigidity and optimises interior space by making the battery pack a structural component of the vehicle.

While specific powertrain details remain undisclosed, MG has confirmed a partnership with smartphone manufacturer Oppo to develop the Cyber X’s cockpit technology. This collaboration aims to deliver a seamless digital experience, including voice control and real-time cloud integration. Although currently a concept, MG has indicated that the Cyber X is likely to enter production, with reports suggesting a launch as early as 2026. The vehicle is expected to debut in China, with potential expansion to other markets depending on demand but whether it retains that Tonka toy styling and pop up headlights remains to be seen.
At the moment, MG offers the ZS SUV, HS SUV and Cyberster sports car in South Africa, with the former coming in at R289 900 and the halo coupe costing R1 399 900.
