Slate Auto is a the new kid on the block but it comes with some serious firepower since the American EV startup is backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Its first vehicle has arrived and is called the Slate Truck. It is a minimalist, compact electric bakkie designed to be affordable and highly customizable. With a base price of $25 000 (R500 000)—potentially dropping below $20 000 after federal incentives—the Slate Truck aims to make electric mobility accessible to a broader audience.
Under the so-called bonnet, the Slate Truck features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 148 kW and 400 N.m of torque. Buyers can choose between a 52.7 kWh battery offering a 242 km range or an optional 84.3 kWh pack extending the range to 386 km. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 8 seconds and has a top speed of 145 km/h.

Emphasising simplicity, the truck comes in a single slate grey colour with unpainted plastic body panels, eliminating the need for paint shops and reducing manufacturing costs. Inside, it forgoes a central infotainment screen, instead providing a universal smartphone mount. Other basic features include manual windows and a straightforward HVAC system. Despite its minimalism, the Slate Truck includes essential safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and forward-collision warning.

Customisation is a key aspect of the Slate Truck. Slate Auto offers over 100 accessories, allowing owners to tailor the vehicle to their needs. Notably, a flat-pack kit can convert the two-seater pickup into a five-passenger SUV, complete with additional airbags for rear passengers. Other options include vinyl wraps, utility racks, and various DIY modifications, supported by Slate’s “Builder’s Book” and “Slate University” programs.
