March 2025 signified the continued growth of new-vehicle sales in South Africa, with naamsa, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa, saying: “March 2025 marked a pivotal month for South Africa’s automotive industry, demonstrating resilience amid economic pressures and delivering strong growth in both domestic new vehicle sales and exports.” In March 2025, domestic new-vehicle sales amounted to a total of 49 493 units, signifying an increase of 12.5%, or 5 504 units, over March 2024. Of the total reported industry sales, an estimated 42 953 units represented dealer sales, while sales to the vehicle rental industry, government and corporate fleets accounted for 7.3%, 3.5% and 2.5% of the overall figure, respectively.
Leading the sales charge, the passenger-car market accounted for 68% of sales. Noteworthy, March 2025’s new passenger-car sales were up by 25.3% (to 33 447 units) compared to the same month in 2024. Local light commercial vehicle (LCV), bakkie and minibus sales were, however, down compared to March 2024, with overall sales of LCVs, bakkies and minibuses declining by 8.4% to 13 328 units in March 2025. Exports did, however, record an increase of 15.7% over March 2024; registering 39 477 units in March 2025.

“The rebound in export sales is a testament to the resilience of South Africa’s automotive sector. Despite ongoing global trade uncertainties, our industry remains steadfast, demonstrating its strength in navigating complex economic landscapes. Our export-led growth model continues to drive industrial expansion and job creation.”

So, which brands sold the most vehicles in South Africa in March 2025? Well, for starters, compared to February 2025, there were some changes to the top 10, with Nissan climbing to seventh place (from 10th) and Mahindra relegating GWM to ninth. Chery dropped to the 10th spot and as expected, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) continues to lead the sales charts, with Suzuki retaining second place and Volkswagen placing third.
