South African consumers showed strong demand for new passenger vehicles in March with the latest data from naamsa showing a 25% increase in comparison to the same period in 2024! Here’s a look at the top 10 best-selling passenger vehicles from the month…
Passenger car sales in South Africa saw a significant boost in March, with 33 447 units sold—a 25.3% increase compared to the same month last year, according to Naamsa. This surge contributed to an overall 12.5% rise in total vehicle sales, bringing the monthly total to 49 493 units. However, the actual numbers could be even higher, as some Chinese brands have not yet shared their official data with the Business Council.
Brandon Cohen, National Chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), pointed out that this growth was especially promising for dealerships, following a strong 17% year-on-year increase in February.

- Suzuki Swift – 1 608 (down from 2 351)
- Toyota Corolla Cross – 1 570 (up from 1 435)
- VW Polo – 1 355 (up from 1 178)
- Hyundai Grand i10 – 1 344 (up from 1 253)
- Nissan Magnite – 1 223 (up from 177)
- Chery Tiggo 4 – 1 102 (down from 1 138)
- Haval Jolion – 1 102 (up from 982)
- Toyota Starlet – 1 075 (down from 1 279)
- Suzuki Fronx – 1 052 (down from 1 123)

Volkswagen reclaimed the top spot in the local market for March 2025 as the Polo Vivo dethroned the Suzuki Swift this month, leading the sales charts with 1 703 units. The Swift followed closely behind with 1 608 units, still maintaining a strong presence. Despite this, both hatchbacks are significantly down from their respective sales of 2 187 and 2 351 in February. Toyota’s Corolla Cross also performed well, securing 1 570 sales, while the standard VW Polo contributed 1 355 units.
Hyundai’s Grand i10 continued its steady run with 1 344 units, just ahead of Nissan’s Magnite, which found 1 223 buyers which is a massive jump from the 177 units sold in the previous month. Meanwhile, Chery’s Tiggo 4 and Haval’s Jolion tied at 1 102 units each with the latter now on the Top 10 list, reflecting the growing popularity of Chinese brands. Toyota’s Starlet added another 1 075 units to the brand’s tally, while Suzuki’s Fronx rounded out the list with 1 052 units, further strengthening the brand’s position in the market.
