Winner: Volkswagen Polo Vivo

Widely regarded as South Africa’s top budget car, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo garnered an immense reputation since arriving in 2010. While it has grown over the years, its good levels of perceived quality and the cachet of the VW badge often make it the first-choice car for those stepping up from the budget-friendly offerings. In a bid to keep pricing competitive, the Vivo makes use of manually adjustable side mirrors and rear passenger windows, and a single-piece folding rear seat backrest.

These concessions may contrast with more generously-equipped rivals, but this simplicity does mean fewer electric components to maintain. The range is powered by a choice of petrol engines comprising a 1.4-litre (63 kW/132 N.m), a 1.6-litre (77 kW/153 N.m), and a more expensive turbocharged engine.

Runner-up: Fiat 500

A left-field choice, the Fiat 500 is a niche offering from the Italian automaker. Though strictly a two-seater, it is characterful, frugal and enjoyable to drive.
