Toyota Gazoo Racing has lifted the veil on the forthcoming 2026 GR Corolla. With the updates, Toyota hopes the Japanese hot hatch will become sharper, faster, and more track-capable than ever before.

Shared during its developmental testing phase, the prototype GR Corolla wears a heavily camouflaged body that still manages to reveal significant exterior changes. Most eye-catching is the addition of a much larger rear wing, hinting at serious aero intent. Up front, new vents on the bonnet and 911 GT3-style fender outlets have been added, joined by redesigned side gills and aggressive tweaks to the front bumper – similar to that of the updated GR Yaris. This could allude to the fact that Toyota has prepared the updated iteration of the hatchback to better handle heat management and achieve more efficient aerodynamics during extended high-performance driving.

Underneath the skin, the 2026 GR Corolla promises revised chassis tuning and a “bump in torque” over the current model. While Toyota hasn’t confirmed if power will increase from 224 kW, the latest iteration of the turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine already delivers a healthy 400 N.m after updates introduced for the 2025 model year. Also worth noting, the GR Corolla now comes standard with front and rear limited-slip differentials and an eight-speed automatic is available alongside the purist-friendly six-speed manual.

Since most information is still under wraps, there is no knowing whether the upgrades shown in this teaser will be offered across the GR Corolla lineup. Perhaps they will be offered for a flagship GRMN variant. What is more, Akio Toyoda himself will sign off on the final product following upcoming test drives.
A global debut is expected in the coming months, and considering its predecessor’s appeal locally, the GR Corolla is almost certainly coming to South Africa.
