The forthcoming Tiggo 8 PHEV has been confirmed for South Africa, and what sets it apart from anything else wearing the Tiggo 8 moniker is Chery’s in-house hybrid system, part of what the company calls its Super Hybrid platform. While the brand hasn’t released full performance or fuel consumption details yet, the setup is built for efficiency and long-distance comfort, rather than outright performance.

But, aside from its electrification, Chery has proudly published that the Tiggo 8 PHEV is centred around a new era of vehicle safety. The body structure uses 65% high-strength steel, with particularly tough materials reinforcing the A- and B-pillars, key areas in a crash. Chery also claims the SUV has passed over 160 crash tests during development. One stunt even involved stacking seven Tiggo 8s on top of each other to prove its structural strength. While this may be a marketing ploy and gimmick, official NCAP testing programmes will be able to determine the true extent of what it is capable of during crashes.

Aside from the hardpoints on the SUV, there’s also a long list of passive and active safety features. Ten airbags come standard, including a centre airbag between the front seats and a knee airbag for the driver. Chery adds that the battery pack, which is often a weak point in plug-in hybrids, is protected by a reinforced steel plate and sealed against dust and water (IP68 rated), with operating temperatures ranging from -35°C to 55°C—helpful for regions with extreme weather or rough terrain.
On the tech front, the Tiggo 8 PHEV runs a Level 2+ driver assistance suite. It includes traffic jam assist, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, and a transparent chassis system that displays road hazards beneath the vehicle. It’s powered by a Snapdragon chip for fast response times, and features four HD cameras and 12 ultrasonic radars for 360-degree coverage.
