South Africa’s passenger vehicle segment saw a strong rebound in May 2025, supported by a 25 basis point interest rate cut by the South African Reserve Bank. The decision, aimed at bolstering affordability and stimulating economic activity, helped lift new passenger car sales to 31 741 units, which represents a 30% increase compared to May 2024. According to Naamsa, this sharp rise reflects improving consumer confidence and credit conditions, underpinned by lower inflation (2.8%) and a strengthening Rand. Rental sales made up 8.5% of the passenger car total, signalling healthy demand across multiple channels.

Industry leaders welcomed the rate cut, highlighting its role in easing instalment pressures for car buyers and encouraging investment in vehicle production. With reduced borrowing costs and inflation expectations now more firmly anchored, the passenger segment is well-positioned for sustained recovery, despite broader global headwinds.
