No stranger to competing at the gruelling hillclimb event, Ford is upping the ante in 2025 with an all-electric prototype which forms part of the latest in a growing line of hill climb challengers from the automaker. In 2023, the SuperVan 4.2 contented and last year’s overall winner was the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck.

Driving duties fall once again to Romain Dumas, who knows this mountain better than most. He still holds the overall record at Pikes Peak at 7 minutes and 57.148 seconds, set in 2018 in the electric Volkswagen ID. R. This year marks his tenth start at the event and his third with Ford. Built in collaboration with Austrian specialists STARD, the Super Mustang Mach-E has been engineered specifically for the mountain’s demanding 19.99 km route.

With 156 corners and a finish line sitting 4 302 metres above sea level, weight and balance matter just as much as power. Ford says the new Mach-E is lighter and more agile than the outgoing SuperTruck and features improved regenerative braking and a more even weight distribution.

Under the carbon fibre skin, three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors produce over 1 043 kW. Energy comes from a 50 kWh high-performance Li-polymer NMC pouch cell battery, running at 799 volts. The whole setup is over 118 kg lighter than last year’s entry and delivers up to 710 kW of regenerative braking power. To handle the rigours of the climb, the Mach-E is fitted with forged magnesium wheels, Pirelli P-Zero tyres, and carbon-ceramic brakes. The bodywork is also doing plenty of heavy lifting at 241 km/h, it generates around 3 130 kg of downforce, more than what the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck could manage.

“This Super Mustang Mach-E demonstrator is the next evolution in our electrification story, lighter, sharper, just as powerful, and purpose-built for high-altitude racing,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance. “Every bit of data we collect here helps us build better EVs for the road, from improving thermal management to enhancing regen strategies.”

Dumas, whose car will carry race number 310 in tribute to his past efforts with Ford, is ready for another shot at the summit. “Last year’s run in the Lightning SuperTruck was incredible, and I’m thrilled to be back,” he said. “The Mach-E is a different kind of machine, and we’re excited to see how far we can push it.” Ford’s history at Pikes Peak dates back to 1916 when a Model T first attempted the climb. Over a century later, the company continues to use the mountain as a proving ground, only now, the technology is electric and the pace is quicker than ever.
