Chery is no stranger to South African consumers, with the automaker having previously done business here between 2008 and 2018 – albeit unsuccessfully. However, the brand re-entered our market in 2021, this time with a new approach and a portfolio that made established industry players take note. The Tiggo 4 Pro heralded the new era, impressing with an array of technologies previously unheard of in the compact SUV segment.

Today, the portfolio comprises the Tiggo Cross, Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro, and Tiggo 4 Pro; powered by a selection of naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. The big news is Chery’s yet-to-be-named bakkie going into production in Q2, with a South African launch slated for later this year or early 2026. While powertrain specifications are still unconfirmed, it’sbelieved a 2.4-litre turbopetrol engine will power the bakkie. There is no word yet on a diesel engine.
