MG Fast Facts

  • Headquarters: Shanghai, China
  • Founded: 1924
  • SA lineup: 3 models
  • Cheapest model: ZS (from R289 900)
  • Most expensive model: Cyberster Dual Motor (R1 399 900)

MG (Morris Garages) operated in South Africa before its current spell, with the last re-entry occurring in 2011, followed by a 2016 exit. Now, with the influx of Chinese vehicles to SA, SAIC Motor (which acquired Nanjing Automotive Corporation (NAC) in 2007, which, in turn, bought MG in 2005) saw the opportunity to reintroduce the British marque to our market. This year’s return saw the introduction of new, contemporary vehicles such as the budget-friendly ZS crossover and the HS SUV.

The Cyberster, an all-electric cabriolet, headlines the portfolio, sprinting from 0-100 km/h in a claimed 3.2 seconds, thanks to twin electric motors sending 375 kW and 725 N.m being sent to all four wheels. The lithium-ion battery pack has a 77 kWh capacity and offers a claimed driving range of around 443 km on a single charge. Although future models are currently under wraps, it is speculated that the MG3 and MG4 EV hatchbacks could come our way.
