Ultra-Rare Ferrari F40 LM Heads to Auction for Eye-Widening Price

One of just 19 Ferrari F40 LMs ever built, the 1993 GTC-spec example you see here is set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s 2025 Monterey auction…and it’s expected to fetch an eye-widening price under the gavel.

A Ferrari F40 LM (Le Mans), built by renowned Ferrari specialist Michelotto, will be offered at RM Sotheby’s 2025 Monterey auction in California on 16 August. This 1993 example of Ferrari’s track-focused F40 is chassis number 14…of just 19 F40 LMs ever produced! So, given its rarity, pedigree, and provenance, the car you see here is expected to fetch between $8.5 million and $9.5 million under the gavel. That’s a staggering R150 million and R170 million at the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate!

The F40 LM is a Ferrari-sanctioned competition version of the standard (if there is such a thing) F40, and was developed for endurance racing and built to the more extreme GTC specification. This makes it the most powerful variant of the F40 family; producing an astonishing 566 kW. Performance upgrades include larger Brembo brakes, wider wheels, softer tyres, and extensive aerodynamic enhancements such as a large front spoiler, revised bonnet, and an adjustable rear wing. Inside, the car is stripped for competition purposes – only the most necessary items, such as racing harnesses and a race-spec instrument panel, are present.

Finished in Ferrari’s signature Rosso Corsa body hue, with Stoffa Vigogna cloth upholstery found inside, the F40 LM that is scheduled for auction features rare Lexan sliding side windows, which further distinguishes it from the road-going model. Most recently, the car won the ‘Ferrari: Passion and Performance Collection’ class at the 2025 ModaMiami concours – underlining its authenticity and appeal to discerning collectors.

Certified by Ferrari Classiche in 2009, this example retains its matching-numbers engine, transaxle, and coachwork. It comes with factory-build sheets, invoices, and documentation by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini. The F40 LM also boasts an impressive competition and display history across Europe and the United States.

Among the most revered of Maranello’s competition cars, this 1990s Ferrari berlinetta is a standout icon with unmatched racing pedigree. And this example could arguably be the most valuable F40 in the world.
