Tata has returned to South Africa’s passenger-car market, with the first shipment of the firm’s four-strong product portfolio having arrived on local shores. Included in the lineup are the Harrier flagship SUV, Curvv coupé-styled crossover, Punch compact crossover (see pricing for the latter here) and the Tiago budget-oriented hatchback.

Comprising a quartet of models, Tata’s local Tiago lineup is priced from a hair below R230 000 for the entry-level, XM derivative to R295 900 for the top-of-the-range, XZ+ variant.

  • Tiago 1.2 XM MT – R227 900
  • Tiago 1.2 XT MT – R257 900
  • Tiago 1.2 XT AMT – R275 900
  • Tiago 1.2 XZ+ AMT – R295 900

The Tiago is equipped with the Indian marque’s 1.2-litre Revotron powertrain, which is also employed by the company’s entry-level crossover/SUV, the Punch. In the Tiago, the naturally aspirated three-cylinder unit produces 63 kW and 113 N.m of torque. Two transmission options are available: a five-speed manual and an automated manual transmission (AMT).

The opening gambit to the range, the XM variant is exclusively available with the former gearbox, while the mid-tier, XT derivative can be had with both transmission options. The top-spec, XZ+ model exclusively drives its front wheels via an AMT.

Depending on the level of specification, the Tiago features either a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system or, in higher-specced models, a unit measuring 10.25 inches. Tata says “most derivatives” feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring.
