Shelby Unveils (633 kW!) Mustang Dark Horse-Based Super Snake-R

Shelby has once again worked its magic with the Ford Mustang Dark Horse, with the US company unveiling the new Super Snake-R.

Shelby has whipped the wraps off the new Super Snake-R. Based on the Mustang Dark Horse, which we evaluated for a road test in the March 2025 issue of CAR magazine, the US company’s latest limited edition is the third in its lineup of reworked seventh-generation Mustangs.

Under the bonnet, Shelby has handed the Blue Oval brand’s 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 breathing apparatus in the form of a 3.0-litre Whipple supercharger. Thanks to the fitment of the latter, the Coyote unit’s peak power output has been bumped up to a healthy 633 kW, delivered to the rear axle via either a 10-speed automatic transmission or, for those who prefer rowing cogs themselves, a Tremec TR-3160 six-speed manual.

The Super Snake-R further gains an upgraded cooling system, reinforced suspension, and a Borla cat-back exhaust. To enhance its handling characteristics, fully adjustable coil-overs, metal spherical wheel bearings, and a rear harness strut bar are also present.

The widebody design pairs metallic front panels with carbon-fibre rear items, which wrap around lightweight forged magnesium wheels. This Shelby Mustang’s exterior is further complemented by additional carbon-fibre elements, including a front splitter, and rear diffuser and wing.

Inside, the Super Snake R stays true to its track-focused ethos. Highlights include a roll bar, reupholstered leather seats embroidered with the Shelby logo, a Shelby gear lever, and a serialised dash plaque. The 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R comes in five factory colours, with satin stripes available as an option.

So, how much does the 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R package cost? Well, pricing starts at $224 995, which, at the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate, translates to almost R4 million.
