If you weren’t aware, in addition to Jaecoo and Omoda, there are several other sub-brands that fall under the Chery umbrella. In addition to the aforementioned brands, there are Lepas and iCAUR, the former and latter of which are scheduled to launch in South Africa in the coming months, and the Rely, the Wuhu-based carmaker’s bakkie arm.

Unveiled at the 2025 Chengdu Motor Show, one of the latest offerings of this Chery sub-brand comes in the shape of the P3X. Based on the company’s Kaitan hybrid architecture, the ladder-frame double cab is equipped with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which pairs a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel internal combustion engine (ICE) with electric motors. How much power and torque the PX3’s diesel-electric setup produces remains unconfirmed, though.

However, the Kaitan platform isn’t exclusive to new-energy drivetrains, and can accommodate other modes of propulsion, including ICE-only. The latter includes a 210 kW/650 N.m 2.5-litre, four-cylinder twin-turbocharged oil-burner and 120 kW/420 N.m 2.3-litre turbodiesel unit.

Fitted with a raft of off-road-oriented accessories, the Rely P3X shown at the motor show sports a retro-inspired front grille that incorporates circular headlamps, replete with daytime-running lights. All-terrain tyres are also present.

When Chery debuted the Rely brand in April 2025, the company said the launch of this new sub-brand “formally signals Rely’s entry and commencement into the global pick-up market”. However, whether Rely will make its way to our shores remains unconfirmed. However, speaking to CarsGuide, Chery Australia’s CEO, Lucas Harris, told this Australian publication that it will introduce a new bakkie, which is based on a new platform, Down Under. So, it could just be this model.

In addition, with our market largely mirroring that of Australia, it’s arguably not unlikely that this bakkie could make its way to our shores in the future. But we’ll have to wait and see. However, as a reminder, there is a Chery bakkie on the cards for South Africa, and it comes in the shape of the Himla.
