New Porsche Flagship SUV to be Petrol-Powered

Porsche has announced that their new flagship SUV, positioned above the Cayenne, will be powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE).

Part of Porsche’s “strategic realignment” of its model roadmap, the German marque’s new flagship SUV will debut with pure petrol and electrified internal combustion engines (ICE) – the latter coming in the shape of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Indeed, despite originally designed to employ a battery-electric powertrain, Porsche has announced it will postpone the new electric-vehicle (EV) platform, with the Stuttgart automaker set to continue updating its current EV models, including the forthcoming Cayenne Electric and future all-electric 718 Cayman and Boxster models. However, Porsche will redesign the EV platform in collaboration with other brands in the Volkswagen Group.

Porsche has stated that the main catalyst for prioritising ICE-powered vehicles over EVs was the slow uptake of the latter. From a financial standpoint, the company deemed developing a new EV platform unfeasible in the current landscape. Global pressures such as rising US import tariffs and a slowing Chinese luxury market also played major roles in Porsche’s updated model plan.

By introducing the new flagship SUV, alongside various other models, with ICE-only and PHEV powertrains, Porsche plans to achieve a “balanced portfolio”. The marque hopes to preserve the longevity of the brand and strengthen its market position by meeting the entire range of customer requirements.

The upcoming SUV, internally referred to as K1, forms part of the Porsche long-term Cycle Plan alongside the ICE- and hybrid-powered Panamera and Cayenne.
