Porsche Confirms Petrol-Powered Future for Cayman and Boxster

As the production of the current Porsche 718 comes to an end next month, Porsche has announced that the forthcoming Cayman and Boxster will include a petrol-powered variant.

Despite Porsche’s pledge in 2022 to make the current 718 fully electric, the Stuttgart automaker has decided to produce petrol-powered variants of the next-generation Cayman and Boxster. Next month will mark the end of the current generation as the final units are scheduled to roll off the production line in October 2025. The next generation is said to retain the same mid-engine configuration as the outgoing models. And while the EV Cayman and Boxster are still in development, the next generation of the duo will be powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE).

However, unlike the outgoing 718, petrol power will reportedly be reserved for the flagship variants and not the entire lineup. In other words, only the RS derivatives will remain petrol-powered, while the GTS and other variants will transition to electric in the future.

Considering the next-generation Cayman and Boxster were originally intended to be fully electric, it would require re-engineering if the platform were to be shared with its petrol-powered counterpart. Another option would be to update the existing MBB platform, which was originally introduced in 2016 with the current series.

While Porsche has introduced hybrid systems in select variants of the 911, including the 992.2 GTS and Turbo S, the petrol-powered 718 duo won’t be hybrids. Instead, the new Cayman and Boxster will employ pure combustion engines with breathing apparatus.

While the Cayman and Boxster are still inevitably nearing the end of their ICE era, Porsche’s decision to keep the model petrol-powered forms part of their “strategic realignment”. Porsche’s decision to retain the petrol-powered Cayman and Boxster is because the German automaker believes eliminating them “would be a fatal mistake”.

As for other models, Porsche’s new flagship “Prestige” SUV will debut as an ICE model alongside a plug-in hybrid variant, despite originally being designed to be an all-electric model.
