South Africa produces a variety of vehicles, including the best-selling Toyota Hilux and Corolla Cross, Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Polo and Polo Vivo, and BMW X3. The country’s largest automotive manufacturing facilities, such as Toyota’s Prospecton plant, Mercedes-Benz’s East London plant, and Ford’s Silverton assembly plant, churn out substantial numbers of vehicles each year. While many are sold locally, a significant portion is exported. Last month alone, 37 500 units left the country for international markets (as opposed to the 35 379 units exported last month), including Germany, the United Kingdom and other African countries.

Volkswagen was South Africa’s top vehicle exporter in August 2025, with naamsa reporting 12 650 vehicles were exported from the Wolfsburg brand’s Kariega assembly line to global markets. Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa saw the largest increase in exports in the eighth month of this year, registering an increase of 2 155 units in August 2025. BMW Group placed third, with 5 200 units, 1 100 units less than the previous month, of the new X3 exported from the Bavarian automaker’s Rosslyn plant. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) and Mercedes-Benz SA exported 4 770 and 3 950 units, respectively.
