In September 2024, SVI Engineering announced a (Ford-backed) B4 armouring package for the Ranger Raptor, which provides occupants protection from handgun rounds. Now, the South African armoured-vehicle company has upped the ante, with SVI announcing the pinnacle model in the Blue Oval’s local Ranger portfolio can be had with B6 protection.
The first Ford-approved assault-rifle protection package for the Ranger Raptor in South Africa, SVI says this B6 armouring solution is the result of a rigorous development process, which included measures to increase the Ranger Raptor’s gross vehicle mass (GVM).
Said SVI Business Development Director Nicol Louw, “Since the Raptor’s special Fox suspension system results in a lower payload compared to other Ranger derivatives, this model was initially deemed unsuitable to handle the extra mass that comes with full assault-rifle protection. The technical solution, of course, is to increase the Raptor’s GVM, a process we’ve now successfully completed with the full blessing of Ford.”
Indeed, in consultation with Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) and Fox, SVI has increases the apex Ranger’s 3 130 kg GVM and 670 kg payload to 3 499 kg and 1 039 kg, respectively, allowing for the fitment of a 360-degree armouring package that can withstand rounds fired from assault rifles such as R1s, AK47s, and R5s.
The B6 package features 38 mm armoured glass, armoured steel plates, and full firewall and footwell protection. In addition to the passenger cell, critical components such as the ABS unit and battery are also protected. The B6-equipped Ranger Raptor retains the donor car’s Fox suspension, but gains upgraded springs. According to the company, the added mass of the B6 kit’s components “is no match” for the flagship Ranger’s 292 kW/583 N.m 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol motor.
Equipping the Ranger Raptor with a B6 package takes approximately three months, the firm says. The kit is priced from R891 735, which excludes VAT and the price of the donor vehicle. As a reminder, the Ranger Raptor is currently priced from R1 270 000, making it one of the most expensive bakkies in South Africa. Noteworthy, the B6-equipped Ranger Raptor’s warranty and selected service/maintenance plan remain intact.
