The South African new-car sales market continues to gain momentum as 2025 advances, with naamsa reporting a total number of 51 880 new vehicles were sold, an increase of 497 units over July 2025, in August 2025. Passenger-car sales made up the lion’s share of the market, with the recorded 36 914 units sold accounting for 71.2% of new car sales.

In August 2025, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) maintained its spot at the top of the best-selling car brands in South Africa. The Corolla Cross reclaimed its number one spot, thanks to a healthy 794-unit increase compared to July 2025. This relegated the locally-built Volkswagen Polo Vivo, which placed first in July 2025 but saw a slight decrease in sales in August, to second place. The Suzuki Swift returned to the number three spot, relegating the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro to fourth place, while the Hyundai Grand i10 placed fifth. The Haval Jolion, which placed sixth in July 2025, dropped to eighth, while the Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Vitz placed ninth and tenth, respectively.

  1. Toyota Corolla Cross – 2 743 units (up 794)
  2. Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 2 314 units (down 95)
  3. Suzuki Swift – 2 101 units (up 229)
  4. Chery Tiggo 4 Pro – 1 339 units (down 265)
  5. Hyundai Grand i10 – 1 270 units (down 122)
  6. Suzuki Fronx – 1 210 units (down 10)
  7. Toyota Starlet – 1 160 units (down 162)
  8. Haval Jolion – 1 123 units (up 21)
  9. Suzuki Ertiga – 1 055 units (up 75)
  10. Toyota Vitz – 885 units (up 132)

Relegated to 11th position by the Vitz, the Fortuner saw a 195-unit decrease in sales compared to July 2025. However, the Hilux-based seven-seater remains South Africa’s best-selling adventure SUV; registering a sales figure of 789 in the eighth month of this year.
