Volkswagen has confirmed that its upcoming ID. Polo all-electric hatchback will spawn a GTI variant in 2027. The ID. Polo GTI hot hatch will follow a similar blueprint to last year’s ID. GTI concept and will be underpinned by VW’s MEB modular electric vehicle platform, which already services much of the Wolfsburg automaker’s ID. model line, from the ID. 3 C-segment hatch to the ID. Buzz compact MPV.
The camouflaged example in the German marque’s press images appears to show typical GTI touches such as mildly flared wheel arches filled with larger alloy wheels, a lowered stance that hints at more performance-oriented suspension and a roof spoiler with a twin-scalloped design that’s echoed in the rear diffuser.
VW hasn’t divulged a great deal of information at this stage, but if the ID. Polo is anything to go by, it should feature a front-mounted electric motor sending 174 kW to the front wheels and fed by the largest battery pack available to the range – a 56 kWh lithium-ion unit that gives the standard ID. Polo a claimed operating range of 450 km.
While VW’s first tilt at an electric hot hatch looks promising, the firm isn’t resting on its laurels just yet. There is already talk of a 210 kW Clubsport model in the making, as well as an AWD R model drawing 298 kW from either a twin or quad electric-motor setup.
