VW Showcases Plans for All-Electric T-Cross with ID. Cross Concept
VW Group used the 2025 Munich IAA to expand on its plans for a refreshed and easily identifiable new product range.

It hasn’t taken long for the head of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Thomas Schäfer, to stamp his mark on this famous German brand. The former CEO of Volkswagen South Africa, Schäfer has stated since the beginning of his term at the helm of VW in 2022, that he wants its product portfolio to once more feel light, easily recognisable and, significantly, affordable, returning to the “people’s cars” values that made this Wolfsburg-based brand famous.
In a move that places increased pressure on Volkswagen Group Africa’s plans for expansion into the African market via predominantly locally assembled internal combustion engines, Schäfer used the occasion of the 2025 Munich Mobility Show to confirm the brand’s plans for an EV future, including a completely new product lineup in the coming years.
Led by head of design Andy Mindt, Volkswagen has followed up on its compact ID. Every1 (basically, the successor to the all-electric Up!) with a new ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI, as well as the new ID. Cross, the latter essentially the battery-powered successor to the current T-Cross.

Built on the brand’s MEB Plus electric platform, the ID. Cross is 4 161 mm long, 1 839 mm wide and 1 588 mm tall, with a 2 601 mm wheelbase.
“Pure Positive is what we’re calling our new design direction,” confirms Mindt. “We want our cars to be pure and authentic in design, but also instantly likeable.” The ID. Cross joins the ID. Polo and its high-performance ID. Polo GTI sibling in the brand’s forthcoming new family of compact, front-wheel-drive EVs, allowing designers to maximise packaging, including interior space and comfort. Volkswagen is claiming 450 litres of luggage space for the ID. Cross, larger than the modern Golf.
Destined to be mimicked across its forthcoming products, the dashboard design has been reduced to a single horizontal band running the width of the car, incorporating two digital displays: an 11-inch digital instrument panel ahead of the driver and a 13-inch central touchscreen. Physical controls have been retained.
VW has confirmed the ID. Cross will feature up to 420 km of EV range, with fast-charging capability.
Schäfer has stated that the new family of ID. Cars, which will enter production in 2026, will be priced from €25 000, or around R515 000, although, as always, the selling price in South Africa will largely depend on current taxation policies, including those targeting new energy vehicles.
