Dutch Racing Legend Jan Lammers to Compete in 2025 Speed Classic Cape Town

Speed Classic Cape Town has announced former F1 driver and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jan Lammers will compete in this event’s Classic Car Saturday on 25 October 2025.  1984 Jaguar TWR XJS

Set to take place on Philip Kgosana Drive from 25 to 26 October 2025, Speed Classic Cape Town will feature a 1.8 km hillclimb where Lammers will compete behind the wheel of a green and white 1984 Jaguar TWR XJS during the Classic Car Saturday event, before the King of the Mountain showdown on Sunday. The car was previously raced by British driver Tom Walkinshaw, who achieved numerous victories with it. The drive holds personal significance for Lammers, who raced under the Tom Walkinshaw Racing banner – including during his 1988 Le Mans victory.

Born in Zandvoort, Netherlands, home of the Dutch Grand Prix, Lammers began his motorsport journey at a local skid school, run by the legendary Rob Slotemaker. After winning the 1978 European Formula 3 Championship, he made his F1 debut in 1979, competing in 41 Grands Prix. Despite showing promise, he was never able to secure a fully competitive seat and retired from Formula 1 after the 1982 Dutch Grand Prix, later returning briefly in 1992.

Following his F1 career, Lammers found success in endurance racing, securing victories at both Le Mans and the Daytona 24 Hours, as well as multiple podiums in IMSA events across North America. He officially retired from competitive racing in 2019, having built a respected career in prototypes and sportscars, and continues to serve as an influential figure in international motorsport.

This won’t be Lammers’ first time racing in South Africa – he previously competed in the South African Grand Prix during his F1 career and took part in several editions of the Kyalami 9 Hour.

While the Speed Classic Cape Town is new territory for all entrants, Lammers admits that local drivers may have the upper hand thanks to their familiarity with Philip Kgosana Drive that makes up the 1.8 km course. Lammers commented on his goals and expectations for the 2025 Speed Classic, “I don’t know if I’m going to drive around there for decoration or for competition. I’ve never driven that car before, so I want to treat the car, the people around me and the event with all the respect they deserve. But for me to be there and to participate, and to just pick up the vibes, that’s priority.”
