Billed as a “performance-inspired” build, Toyota has whipped the wraps off the Turbo Trail Cruiser ahead of its public debut at the 2025 SEMA Show, which takes place from 4-8 November in Las Vegas, US. Reimagined for the modern age, the 1985 Land Cruiser FJ60-based model retains the original’s exterior styling, though gains a significant under-the-bonnet upgrade. Indeed, the Japanese automaker has ditched the original 4.2-litre inline-six mill in favour of a 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged V6.
Sourced from the Tundra bakkie, the i-Force motor produces 290 kW and 649 N.m of torque, making it over two times more powerful than the unit it replaces. However, although boasting more power and twisting force, the manufacturer says the modern powerplant offers improved efficiency and refinement, and reduced emissions.
The reimagined Land Cruiser FJ60 was built to look as though it has rolled off the factory floor with the i-Force unit equipped as standard. To this end, the company did not alter the vehicle’s structural rigidity, cut through the firewall, or relocate any of the engine mounts. Instead, Toyota’s motorsport division introduced new engine mounts, while fitting an adapter to couple the V6 to the original five-speed manual transmission. Other modifications include redesigning the oil pan (to fit the car’s chassis layout) and the fitment of a custom exhaust and wiring harness. A new heat exchanger, to help keep the turbocharged engine cool, was fitted using the original mounting points. In addition to the new engine, the Turbo Trail Cruiser features reworked front suspension, a 38 mm suspension lift, and 35-inch tyres.
The interior retains its original appearance, but has gained a few subtle upgrades to bring it up to date. This includes an infotainment touchscreen and JBL sound system.
“The Turbo Trail Cruiser is about showing what happens when Toyota’s modern performance technology is integrated into one of our most iconic classics,” said Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Garage and lead builder of the project. “It’s a hot-rod approach with Toyota DNA — power, drivability, and reliability in a package that still feels true to the original Land Cruiser.”
