Despite only having been on the market for three years, Alfa Romeo has decided to give the Tonale an extensive update that ushers in, among other things, some styling revisions, an array of new colours and a reworked model lineup.

The existing Tonale range will be augmented with the addition of Sprint, Ti and Veloce models, as well as a launch-edition Sport Speciale that features several sporty styling enhancements such as gloss black Brembo brake callipers, silver side skirts and bumper accents, and white Alfa Romeo lettering.

In terms of the styling updates, the Tonale now features a redesigned nose that incorporates a new, concave scudetto – or ‘little shield’ (the signature grille) that’s inspired by that of the 33 Stradale supercar, as well as more prominent front air dams. The emblem badging has undergone some changes – now adopting the black-and-white motif introduced with the Junior. The designers have also marginally widened the front and rear tracks and reduced the car’s front overhang to give it a more purposeful stance, and a choice of new 19-inch Stile and 20-inch, lightweight Fori alloy wheel designs are now offered.

The broadened colour palette now sees the Tonale offered with the choice of eight shades, including three metallic options: Rosso Brera, Verde Monza and Giallo Ocra, which join the existing Nero Alfa, Bianco Alfa, Grigo Vesuvio, Verde Montreal and Blu Misano colours. The contrasting black roof remains an optional extra.

Inside, the updated Tonale’s cabin features new colour and trim combinations, including the new “cannelloni” (ribbed weave) seats upholstered in red leather with coordinated stitching or in two-tone black/white Alcantara, paired with a dashboard upholstered in Alcantara with contrasting stitching. The Sport Speciale model is further distinguished by multi-coloured ambient lighting in the dashboard in a serpent-skin pattern as a nod to the serpent on the company’s badge. In addition, the mildly revised facia now plays host to a rotary gear selector.

In terms of powertrains, the lineup will retain its range of turbocharged petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid offerings. The Tonale Ibrida features a 1.5-litre turbopetrol unit developing 130 kW and coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 1.6-litre turbodiesel with 97 kW is also offered with a six-speed dual-clutch ’box. Topping the range is the all-wheel-drive Q4 Ibrida Plug-in hybrid, available in 141 and 201 kW states of tune.
