In September 2025, Volkswagen announced its upcoming all-electric compact hatchback will don the ‘Polo’ moniker. Indeed, according to Thomas Schäfer, CEO of VW passenger cars, the German automaker will move their well-known nameplates, which is “firmly anchored into people’s minds”, into the future…and this will include the ID. Cross, an all-electric version of the T-Cross compact crossover.

The ID. Polo was first showcased – dressed in camouflage, no less – to the public at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. However, at the time, the Wolfsburg brand had yet to reveal more detailed information about the upcoming model. Well, VW has now revealed key details about the all-electric Polo.

VW ID. Polo Dimensions

Based on VW’s “further developed” Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB+) platform, the ID. Polo measures 4 053 mm in length, 1 816 mm in width, and 1 530 mm in height. For comparison, the emissions-free model’s bodywork is 21 mm shorter, 65 mm wider, and 79 mm taller than that of its internal combustion engine (ICE) sibling. The ID. Polo’s wheelbase is also longer, 2 600 vs 2 552 mm.

According to VW, although the ID. Polo is “roughly” similar in size to the ICE variant, thanks to the compact drive modules of the MQB+ architecture, the cabin benefits from a 19 mm increase in length, particularly in the rear compartment, and improved headroom. The firm claims a boot capacity of up to 435 litres – an increase of 84 litres over the ICE Polo – which expands to 1 243 litres when folding down the rear seatbacks.

VW ID. Polo Power Output and Electric Range

At launch, the ID. Polo will be available in three states of tune: 85 kW, 99 kW and 155 kW. The former two models will be equipped with a 37 kWh (net) lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, while the 155 kW derivative’s electric motor will be fed by a 52 kWh (net) nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) item. While VW has yet to announce the operating ranges of the 85 and 99 kW derivatives, the carmaker has confirmed the 155 kW variant will offer an operating range of up to 450 km on a single charge.

VW ID. Polo GTI in the Works

In addition to the aforementioned three models, as we reported in September 2025, an all-electric Polo GTI is also on the cards. The GTI-badged version of the ID. Polo will also feature a 52 kWh NMC battery and produce 166 kW. As a reminder, the ICE-powered Polo GTI, which, along with its non-GTI siblings, is exclusively built at VW’s Kariega plant in South Africa, produces 147 kW.

VW ID. Polo Price

So, how much will the ID. Polo cost once it is launched in 2026? Well, VW has said the initial ID. Polo range will be priced from €25 000, which translates to R490 741 at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate. For comparison, the 85 kW ICE model is priced from R445 400. It remain unconfirmed whether the ID. model will make its way to our shores.
