Aiming to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to shaping the future of one of its most iconic nameplates, following the positive response to initial teaser details, Mercedes-Benz has announced prototypes of the G-Class Cabriolet are currently undergoing rigorous testing – the latter allowing the Three-pointed Star brand’s engineers to gather “comprehensive” data to ensure the open-top driving experience provided by the future G-Class Cabriolet production models is “unparalleled” and “unmistakably G-Class”. Dressed in subtle camouflage, the new drop-top G-Class is currently completing its first test kilometres in Austria, before making its way to Sweden, where it will be put through demanding winter testing.
When the series-production version will make its global debut remains unconfirmed. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if the German marque introduces this model towards the end of 2026. We also expect the G-Class Cabriolet will be available with the same petrol and diesel powertrains, with an all-electric derivative likely following in the future, employed by the current lineup.
As a reminder, locally, the G-Class can be had with the choice of three powertrains. This includes the firm’s 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel, which churns 270 kW (or 285 kW for short durations thanks to the incorporation of mild-hybrid tech) and 750 N.m of torque, the latter delivered to all four corners from a low 1 350 r/min; 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbocharged petrol, which produces 430 kW (or 445 kW with mild-hybrid electric boost) and 850 N.m; and an emissions-free drivetrain in the G580 with EQ Technology. The latter model’s dual electric-motor setup produces a combined system output of 432 kW and a tarmac-shredding 1 164 N.m of twisting force.
