Chery to produce cars at Jaguar Land Rover plant in UK – report

A report has suggested that Chery and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are in talks about the Chinese automaker using the extra capacity of JLR’s UK factories to produce Chery and Omoda & Jaecoo models.

Recently, Chery South Africa has announced that, come mid-2026, it will purchase Nissan SA’s Rosslyn production plant. As we reported on 23 January 2026, “This shift comes amid mounting pressure on Chinese manufacturers, with new Chinese State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) guidelines prohibiting below-cost vehicle pricing, alongside tighter export rules taking effect in 2026.”

However, it seems that there may be more in the Wuhu-based brand’s future regarding the manufacturing of its vehicles. Indeed, according to a report from Financial Times, the Chinese marque and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are currently in discussion regarding the production of Chery and Omoda & Jaecoo vehicles at one of JLR’s assembly facilities in the UK. The negotiations – which are being facilitated by the British Government, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in China to discuss trade negotiations – are still in an early phase, the report states. And at this stage, there is no guarantee that Chery and JLR will settle on a deal.

The UK Government’s annual production target for the automotive industry is 1.3 million vehicles by 2035. This is a significant increase over the estimated 738 000 cars built in the UK last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Chery, who recorded a global sales figure of over 2.8 million units in 2025, and JLR have been partners in the Chinese market since 2012, with select Jaguar models and Land Rover products – Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque – assembled in China for the Chinese market. Chinese production of Jaguar models came to an end in 2025, while production of the latter two models in this market is scheduled to cease in 2026.

This evolution from exporter to global manufacturer reflects mounting pressure from rising international tariffs and stricter Chinese export regulations, which are increasingly pushing Chinese brands to localise production in key markets rather than rely on aggressive price-led imports. As we reported on 28 January, SA is mulling steep tariffs on vehicles from China and India.
