Mercedes-Benz has handed the S-Class a round of thorough updates, including a new V8 engine option. So, let’s first take a look at the powertrain lineup…
The S350d 4Matic employs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six incorporating 48 V mild-hybrid tech – the latter of which providing a 17 kW/205 N.m boost for short durations. The S350d 4Matic produces 230 kW and 650 N.m. The full complement of torque is available from a low 1 200 r/min. According to the firm, these figures allow the S350d 4Matic to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.4 seconds, before topping out at 250 km/h. The average fuel consumption is rated at 6.2 L/100 km.
The S450d 4Matic employs the same 3.0-litre, six-cylinder oil-burner as the S350d 4Matic, though gains a boost in power and torque, to 270 kW and 750 N.m. The S450d 4Matic dispatches the 0-100 km/h dash in 5.2 seconds, with the top speed matching that of the S350d 4Matic. This model’s claimed average fuel consumption is 6.3 L/100 km.
The petrol powertrain lineup kicks off with the S450 4Matic, which employs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, coupled with 48 V mild-hybrid tech, endowed with 280 kW and 560 N.m. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds, a 250 km/h top speed, and an average fuel consumption of 8.1 L/100 km.
Sharing the S450 4Matic’s six-cylinder turbopetrol, the S500 4Matic is endowed with 330 kW and 600 N.m – good for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.5 seconds. The uprated unit’s sips 8.2 L/100 km on average.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class gains new V8 engine
Perhaps the biggest news surrounding the powertrain lineup is the introduction of a new (flat-plane crank) V8, employed by the S580 4Matic. The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged unit produces 395 kW and 750 N.m – the latter available between 2 500-4 500 r/min. According to the Stuttgart brand, these figures allow the S580 4Matic to complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.0 seconds. The V8 unit has a claimed average fuel consumption of 10.5 L/100 km.

A duo of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models – the S450e and S580e 4Matic – complete the revised lineup. Both models employ the same 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six (in different states of tune) that’s paired with a 120 kW/480 N.m electric motor. The (rear-wheel-driven) S450e’s internal combustion (ICE) unit produces 240 kW and 540 N.m, while the (all-wheel-drive) S580e 4Matic’s churns out 330 kW and 560 N.m. The S450e and S580e 4Matic produces combined system outputs of 320 kW/680 N.m and 480 kW/750 N.m, respectively.
The S450e sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in a claimed 5.7 seconds, while the more powerful model reaches the one-tonne in 4.4 seconds. Mercedes-Benz claims all-electric operating ranges of up to 118 km and 103 km for the S450e and S580e, respectively.

From an exterior point of view, the most significant updates come in the shape of a larger, illuminated front grille, fresh daytime-running lights, and new wheel designs. Customers also have the option of having an illuminated three-pointed star on the bonnet.
The interior plays host to Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX Superscreen as standard. The latter setup pairs a central, 14.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with a 12.3-inch front passenger display and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The setup incorporates the German marque’s latest MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System).
