Kicking off the list is Volkswagen’s Mk8.5 Golf GTI, which we sampled for an exclusive first local drive in 2025. The updated eighth-generation Golf GTI features subtle cosmetic enhancements, including new alloy wheels. Though, the most noteworthy change to the package is its increased power output – up 15 kW over its predecessor. The Mk8.5’s uprated EA888 powertrain produces 195 kW. Twisting force has remained untouched, with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot delivering 370 N.m to the front axle via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG). VW claims the Mk8.5 Golf GTI completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds.
8=. Toyota GR Yaris 1.6T GR-Four Rally – 210 kW

In addition to exterior and interior revisions, for the updated GR Yaris, which we sampled at the local launch in 2025, Toyota introduced an eight-speed Direct Automatic Transmission option to the lineup…while handing its most compact GR product a boost in power and torque – up 12 kW and 40 N.m. The GR Yaris’ 1.6-litre turbo-triple produces 210 kW and 400 N.m – good for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.2 seconds. Power is delivered to the road via the Japanese automaker’s GR-Four all-wheel drivetrain.
8=. Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T GR-Four Circuit – 210 kW

Tying with its smaller sibling, the updated GR Corolla employs the same 1.6-litre, three-cylinder powertrain. The revised model can also be had with the choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or DAT.

Volkswagen Group Africa is ‘confident’ the Mk8.5 Golf R will come to SA. However, while the timing of the updated (more powerful, 245 kW) eighth-generation, which we’ve driven in Germany, remains unconfirmed, the Mk8 model soldiers on in our market. Listed in CARguide, the Mk8 Golf R’s EA888 engine produces 235 kW, delivered to the road via VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system – the latter paired with a seven-speed DSG.
