Ford’s bakkie portfolio comprises an array of models, including the F-150, Ranger and Maverick. Now, the Blue Oval brand is looking to introduce a new model to its bakkie lineup before the end of this decade. In addition, it forms part of the US automaker’s plans to introduce five more affordable new vehicles – priced below $40 000 (around R637 000 at the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate) – by 2030.
Although the manufacturer has remained tight-lipped about details surrounding the upcoming model, in addition to announcing targeted pricing, the company has confirmed it will be powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE). The model will be built at the firm’s Stanton assembly facility in Tennessee, with production expected to kick off in 2029.
In addition, Ford CEO Jim Farley has said it will be a “different kind of truck”. Though, where this model, which has yet to be named, will fit into Ford’s bakkie range has yet to be confirmed. However, we expect it will be positioned below the Ranger.
Just how much below the $40 000 mark the upcoming model will cost remains to be seen. For reference, the firm’s smallest bakkie offering, the Maverick, which is built at Ford’s Hermosillo, Sonora plant in Mexico, is priced from $28 145 (around R500 000) in the US, with US pricing for the Ranger starting from $33 350 (around R532 000). The F-150 is priced from $37 290 (around R595 000) in the US.
