Omoda C5 SHS hybrid: SA launch date confirmed

The C5 SHS is en route to South Africa, with Omoda’s local arm announcing when the hybrid model will launch on our shores.

Omoda & Jaecoo has confirmed the local arrival of the C5 SHS (Super Hybrid System), a hybrid variant of the best-selling model in this Chery sub-brand’s local model portfolio. Following the updated C5 lineup, with the C5 SHS, the Chinese automaker aims to broaden the appeal of its popular compact SUV, which featured in our 2025 SUV Shootout.

The petrol-electric C5’s powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a single electric motor – the latter fed by a 1.83 kWh battery. The hybrid arrangement produces a combined system output of 165 kW and 310 N.m of torque, delivered to the front wheels via a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The firm claims an average fuel consumption of 5.3 L/100 km, with a combined driving range of 1 000 km. The C5 SHS completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 7.9 seconds.

The C5 SHS will launch in SA in March 2026. Local pricing has yet to be revealed; however, we expect the C5 SHS will be positioned at the top of the model range, which is currently priced from R339 900 to R465 900.

As standard, the C5 SHS includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and digital instrumentation of similar size. Music is relayed through an eight-speaker sound system. Further included in the package are an electric tailgate. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as blind-spot monitoring and lane change assist are also included. The C5 SHS rolls on a set of model-specific alloy wheels.
