With fuel prices set to increase in April 2026, we’ve rounded up the nine most fuel-efficient hatchbacks currently available in South Africa as of March 2026.
7=. Suzuki Ignis – 4.9 L/100 km

The Suzuki Ignis employs a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine producing 61 kW and 113 N.m. The naturally aspirated unit returns an average fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100 km in both five-speed manual and automatic manual transmission (AMT) derivatives. The Ignis is priced from R237 900.
7=. Renault Kwid – 4.9 L/100 km

Matching the Ignis’ claimed average fuel consumption, the Renault Kwid is equipped with a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol motor, coupled with either a five-speed manual or AMT with the same number of cogs. The most affordable hatchback in SA, the Kwid is priced from R178 799.

With the new generation, the Suzuki Swift gained a box-fresh 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine. The atmospheric unit produces 60 kW and 112 N.m, and returns 4.4 L/100 km when equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the Suzuki S-Presso’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine sips a claimed 4.4 L/100 km. The atmospheric powertrain 49 kW and 89 N.m. The S-Presso is priced from R178 900.
5. MG MG3 1.5 Hybrid+ – 4.3 L/100 km

Introduced to the SA market in August 2025, the hybrid variant of the MG3 pairs a 75 kW/128 N.m 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor – the latter fed by a 1.83 kWh battery. The petrol-electric setup produces a combined system output of 155 kW and 425 N.m of torque. MG claims an average fuel consumption figure of 4.3 L/100 km. The flagship MG3 is priced from R469 900.

The Suzuki Celerio employs the same 1.0-litre engine as the S-Presso, though, interestingly, is more frugal at the pumps. Suzuki claims 4.2 L/100 km for the AMT-equipped variant. The Celerio is priced from R188 900.

Based on the Celerio, the Toyota Vitz has identical claimed fuel consumption figures, with the AMT model sipping only 4.2 L/100 km (claimed). The Vitz is priced from R178 800.
2. Toyota Corolla hatch 1.8 Hybrid – 4.0 L/100 km

Earlier this year, Toyota SA revised its Corolla hatch and sedan lineup to exclusively feature a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol-electric powertrain, which produces 103 kW and 142 N.m of torque. Power is transferred to the front wheels via a CVT transmission. The Japanese automaker claims the hybrid powertrain returns an average fuel consumption of 4.0 L/100 km. The Corolla hatch and sedan are priced from R595 100 and R584 400, respectively.
1. Honda Fit 1.5 Hybrid e.HEV – 3.7 L/100 km

The most frugal hatchback currently available in SA, the Honda Fit hybrid produces a combined system output of 90 kW and 253 N.m. Honda claims an average fuel consumption of 3.7 L/100 km. The petrol-electric Fit is priced from R544 900.
