In addition to his stand-up comedy and acting, Jerry Seinfeld is well known for his collection of sought-after, and especially rare, Porsches. However, his collection not only comprised cars donning the Porsche badge. Indeed, it also included the car you see here, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E. It seems curious, but let us explain. See, the W124-generation Mercedes-Benz 500 E, which was produced between 1991 and 1995, was developed in close collaboration with Porsche. So, it makes sense that this performance sedan would form part of Seinfeld’s collection.
Now, the 500 E that was formerly owned by Seinfeld himself has been sold at Gooding Christie’s 2026 Amelia Island Auction … and it fetched a record price. Seinfeld’s 1992 500 E sold for a whopping $357 000, which, at the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate, translates to R5 969 414.53 – the highest amount ever recorded for a 500 E at auction (that is known of, at least).
However, this 1992 example is not only a special purchase because of its provenance of being owned by a celebrity, but also because of its mint condition. Indeed, this 500 E has only 3 790 km on the clock!
Assembled at Porsche’s Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen production plant, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E is powered by a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine producing 240 kW and 480 N.m of torque – the former and latter available from 5 700 and 3 900 r/min, respectively. The M119 unit is paired with a four-speed torque-convertor automatic transmission, which exclusively delivers power to the rear wheels. The 500 E also features ventilated brake discs at all four corners, front independent suspension, and self-levelling rear hydropneumatic suspension.
