Codenamed ‘KP31’, while Chery is “pushing hard” to launch its diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) double-cab bakkie in South Africa in 2026, the Chinese automaker has confirmed what the ‘KP31’ will be called in Australia.
Following a competition in which Chery asked Australians what the ‘KP31’ should be called Down Under, a name has finally been decided. According to the Wuhu brand, it received “more than” 20 000 submissions – the latter narrowed down to a shortlist including names such as Outrider, Orca, Ironbark, Bushwalker, Longreach, Ridgeback, Terra and Mate. However, ‘Stockman’ ultimately received the most votes (over 25%) from “over” 12 000 Australians during the public voting phase. Indeed, the ‘KP31’ will be officially called ‘Stockman’ in the Australian market. Though, whether it will be known by the latter name in SA remains unconfirmed.
The yet-to-be-named-for-SA Chery bakkie’s PHEV powertrain comprises a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine and a single electric motor. Although peak power and torque outputs have yet to be confirmed, reports have suggested this “world-first” diesel-electric setup will produce around 260 kW and 680 N.m. Chery claims an electric-only operating range of up to 170 km.
The PHEV setup is said to be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, replete with a low range transfer case. A selection of driving modes, including for off-roading, will be on offer. To elevate its go-anywhere prowess, the ‘KP31’ will boast front, centre and rear diff locks, and feature a tight-turn assist function to enhance manoeuvrability in demanding terrain.
Underpinned by Chery’s ‘Kaitan’ ladder-frame platform, the new-energy bakkie measures 5 450 mm in length and 1 920 mm in width. The ‘KP31’ has a payload and braked towing capacity of 1 000 and 3 500 kg, respectively.
