Launched in SA in April 2026, the C5 SHS (Super Hybrid System) spearheads Omoda’s local C5 portfolio. The flagship C5 model’s new-energy powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor – the latter fed by a 1.83 kWh battery pack. The C5 SHS’s (traditional) hybrid system produces combined system outputs of 165 kW and 295 N.m. The C5 SHS has a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100 km.

The MG3 Hybrid+ combines a 75 kW/128 N.m 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol internal combustion engine (ICE) with an electric motor, fed by a 1.83 kWh battery, for a combined system output of 155 kW and 425 N.m. MG claims its hybrid compact hatchback returns an average fuel consumption of 4.3 L/100 km.

3. BYD Atto 2 DM-i — from R449 900

Launched in June 2026 as the most affordable plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in SA, the BYD Atto 2 is priced from R449 900. The Atto 2 DM-i’s 1.5-litre PHEV powertrain produces a combined system output of 122 kW and 300 N.m. Power is delivered to the road via a front-wheel drivetrain – the latter paired with an e-CVT transmission. BYD claims a combined average fuel consumption of 5.1 L/100 km and an electric-only range of 40 km on a fully charged 7.85 kWh battery.

2. Chery Tiggo Cross 1.5 CSH Hybrid – from R439 900

The previous most affordable self-charging hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in SA, the Chery Tiggo Cross CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) features an atmospheric 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor that’s coupled with a 1.83 kWh battery. The CSH powertrain develops 150 kW and 310 N.m of torque, and returns a claimed fuel consumption of 5.4 L/100 km. The new-energy Tiggo Cross was one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles CAR magazine tested in 2025.

1. GWM Ora 5 1.5T HEV Super Luxury DCT – R424 900

Launched in SA in July 2026, the GWM Ora 5 is available with the choice of three powertrains: ICE-only, HEV and battery-electric (BEV). The HEV powertrain is available in Super Luxury and Ultra Luxury specification – the former and latter priced from R424 900 and R474 900, respectively. The Ora 5 HEV is powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol ICE coupled with an electric motor fed by a 1.1 kWh battery. The Ora 5 HEV produces 164 kW and 476 N.m. GWM claims an average fuel consumption of 5.1 L/100 km for the HEV model.
