Shared with the ID. Polo, the ID. Cross is based on VW’s EV-focused MEB+ platform. The ID. Cross measures 4 153 mm in length, 1 795 mm in width, and 1 581 mm in height — dimensions comparable to the T-Cross. However, the ID. Cross’ wheelbase is longer than its internal combustion (ICE) sibling’s, at 2 601 vs 2 551 mm.
Despite being similar in size as the T-Cross, VW says the ID. Cross offers more space for occupants and luggage. Front and rear headroom are rated at 1 044 and 973 mm, respectively. VW claims a boot capacity of 475 litres – an increase of 20 litres over the T-Cross – which expands to 1 345 litres for utility purposes when folding down the rear seatbacks. Sited below the bonnet, the ID. Cross’ front luggage compartment offers an additional 25 litres of packing space.
The ID. Cross’ interior plays host to VW’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, which can be configured to display Golf Mk1-inspired instrumentation graphics, and 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment. A 425 W Harman Kardon sound system featuring 10 speakers, a panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system are listed among the optional extras.
A front-mounted electric motor is employed across the board and coupled with either a 37 or 52 kWh battery offering a claimed operating range of up to 427 km. Equipped with the 37 kWh item, the electric motor is available in two states of tune – 85 and 99 kW. Models featuring the larger-capacity battery produce 155 kW.
VW claims the smaller battery can receive up to 90 kW at a DC fast charger. Plugged into such a facility, the 37 kWh item charges from 10-80% in 23 minutes, the German marque says. At the same facility, and with a maximum charging rate of 105 kW, the 52 kWh battery charges from 10-80% in 24 minutes. The ID. Cross also offers Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, which allows owners to charge external devices, including e-bikes, at a power output of up to 3.6 kW.
The ID. Cross is priced from €27 995, which translates to R524 626 at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate, for the Trend entry-level model producing 85 kW. As a reminder, the 85 kW base-spec T-Cross is priced from R418 200 in SA. The ID. Cross remains unconfirmed for our market.
