Bentley Motors has teased the Torcal, the upcoming fourth model in the British luxury marque’s portfolio and the brand’s first electric vehicle (EV). The name ‘Torcal’ is derived from the Latin word ‘torquere’, meaning ‘to twist’. It is inspired by the natural landmark in Andalusia, Spain, known as El Torcal de Antequera. The idea is Bentely shifting to a new era of propulsion – electricity. This isn’t the first car from the Crewe-based automaker to be named after a natural landmark – so were the Bentayga, Bacalar and Batur.
The Torcal is smaller than the Bentayga. While details around this Bentley currently remain under wraps, some information has been revealed. Road & Track’s semi-exclusive preview of the Torcal revealed that it is approximately 4 877 mm long, and Bentley is quoting a range of more than 483 km. A teaser image of this electric SUV shows the rear of the car, presenting the rear badging and crystal-look taillamps.
Reports have also suggested the Torcal could be related to the Porsche Cayenne Electric. Should that be the case, it could feature the Cayenne’s dual electric-motor setup, which produces a minimum of 300 kW and 825 N.m of torque.
Said Bentley Chairman and CEO, Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, “For 107 years Bentleys have been the most incredibly complete cars – effortless performance, outstanding comfort, exquisite British handcraftsmanship using the best natural materials and a soundtrack with soul. Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters, and may just be the most considered car in our history.”
