2026 Jaecoo J5 SHS hybrid price & specs in South Africa

The Jaecoo J5 SHS (Super Hybrid System), which we sampled on a long-distance road trip in China, has officially touched down in South Africa following the introduction of its all-electric sibling, the J5 BEV.

The J5 SHS’s hybrid powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and front-mounted electric motor – the latter fed by a 1.83 kWh battery pack. The petrol-electric arrangement produces combined power and torque outputs of 165 kW and 295 N.m, delivered to the front wheels via a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The Chery sub-brand claims an average fuel consumption of 5.3 L/100 km and a combined driving range of 980 km from a full, 51-litre tank of fuel.

The Jaecoo J5 SHS is priced from R459 900, making it one of the most affordable hybrid vehicles in SA. Included in the price are a five-year/150 000 km vehicle warranty, 10-year/1 million km engine warranty, and a five-year/75 000 km service plan.

Inside, the J5 SHS features black leather upholstery, 8.0-inch digital instrumentation, 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone screen mirroring, a 50 W wireless smartphone charging dock, a six-speaker audio system, dual-zone climate control, and six-way electric adjustment for the driver’s pew. A reverse-view camera system and aft park distance sensors are also present.

Safety-wise, this Jaecoo is fitted with six airbags, Isofix child-seat anchorages, electronic stability programme (ESP), and traction control. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and traffic jam assist.

The J5 SHS features MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension. Disc brakes are fitted at all four corners, with the items at the front being ventilated. The J5 SHS rides on 18-inch wheels.
