The second-generation Ford Everest disrupted the game during its tenure, but how viable is it as a used buy in 2026?

The bakkie-based SUV segment in South Africa has historically been a one-horse race, especially because it’s been dictated by the towering market share of the Toyota Fortuner. When Ford introduced the second-generation Everest (codenamed U375) to local shores in late 2015, it arrived with a singular mandate: disrupt this monopoly. Leveraging the wildly successful T6 Ranger platform, Ford executed a masterclass in mechanical adaptation. Engineers discarded the agricultural leaf springs of the bakkie in favour of a more sophisticated coil-spring rear suspension setup. This was not merely a Ranger with a canopy, but a refined, capable seven-seater that challenged the segment’s benchmarks for ride comfort and active safety.

A rundown on the Ford Everest

The architectural brilliance of the second-generation Everest lies in its rear axle. By utilising a solid rear differential suspended by coil springs and a Watt’s linkage, Ford achieved a pliant, comfortable ride that ironed out corrugated dirt roads far more effectively than its primary rival. Inside, the cabin offers genuine seven-seat practicality, with the third row offering acceptable legroom for teenagers, rather than just toddlers. Early models utilised the clunky SYNC 2 infotainment system, but Ford upgraded the interior to the vastly superior, Apple CarPlay-enabled SYNC 3 system from 2017 onward.

The powertrain narrative is divided by the 2019 facelift. Launch models (2015-2019) relied on Ford’s Puma turbodiesels. The entry point was the 2.2-litre, four-cylinder TDCi, delivering 118 kW and 385 N.m. The halo engine was the 3.2-litre, five-cylinder TDCi, generating 147 kW and 470 N.m of torque. Both were paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

The 2019 facelift recalibrated the lineup. Ford introduced its Panther engine family, utilising a smaller, 2.0-litre displacement block. The 2.0-litre Single Turbo (SiT) produced 132 kW and 420 N.m, while the flagship, 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo punched out 157 kW and 500 N.m. Crucially, these new engines were mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

What to look out for when buying a used Ford Everest

  • 3.2 TDCi oil pump failure: On the 3.2-litre, five-cylinder engines, the variable-flow oil pump features internal vanes that can crack and fail over time. Owners should proactively replace the oil pump as preventative maintenance around the 150 000 km mark.
  • 10-speed automatic hunting: Early iterations of the 10-speed gearbox are known for rough, jerky shifts and incessant “gear hunting”. Ensure the Transmission Control Module (TCM) software has been updated.
  • Split intercooler hoses (2.2 and 3.2 TDCi): A common fault on the pre-facelift Puma engines is the splitting of the rubber intercooler hoses under high boost. This results in an audible rushing air sound, excessive black smoke from the exhaust, and a sudden loss of power.
  • 2.0 Bi-Turbo oil leaks: Early 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo models occasionally suffered from oil leaks around the timing cover and turbocharger piping. Inspect the lower engine tray for fresh oil residue.
  • SYNC 2 frustrations: Pre-2017 models equipped with the SYNC 2 interface (characterised by a screen divided into four distinct colour quadrants) suffer from input lag and lack modern smartphone mirroring capabilities.

Which model to buy

Buyers are encouraged to target a post-2019 Everest 2.0SiT XLT 10-speed automatic. While the 157 kW BiT offers immense pulling power, the SiT variant is arguably the mechanical sweet spot of the entire generation. It provides 132 kW and 420 N.m – which is ample for heavily loaded family holidays and moderate towing – while bypassing the added complexity and potential thermal liabilities of a sequential twin-turbo setup. Targeting a post-2019 facelift model also secures the SYNC 3 infotainment interface, an enhanced cabin, and the better fuel economy that accompanies the 10-speed transmission. In addition, the XLT trim provides the perfect balance of necessary creature comforts, including leather upholstery and essential active safety features, without the inflated price tag of the flagship, Limited models.
