South Africa’s SUV craze grows by the day and one of the long-standing Indian competitors in the segment has been completely refreshed; the all-new Scorpio-N. This isn’t just another pumped up hatchback with rugged plastic trim, the Scorpio is a body-on-frame D-segment SUV and while it has always been a more unfamiliar choice in the market from the onset, the newcomer hopes to bolster future brand success.

As the dealer network grows in Southern Africa, Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa stated: “Our decision to include South Africa in the global reveal of the Scorpio-N is a clear sign of our commitment to the country as our second home outside of India.”

Propelling the newcomer forward will be a choice of either petrol or diesel powertrains, the former being a TGDi mStallion engine with 149 kW and 380 Nm while the latter offers similar outputs, 128 kW and 400 Nm to be exact. Both will be available along with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission with a 4×4 option too.

The new Scorpio-N hasn’t lost its utilitarian aesthetic although it has been refined to assimilate into suburban environments better than before since the exterior has been given Pininfarina treatment while manufacturing takes place at the Mahindra facility in Chakan, Pune. The interior has also been elevated to a higher level of sophistication with a combination of materials like leather and metal ensconcing the passengers.

The new Scorpio-N also comes with a first-in-class intelligent terrain management technology known as 4XPLOR in addition to an electronic 4Wheel Drive System which can shift between 2WD and 4WD modes at the touch of a button. Three drive modes also accompany the new Mahindra; Zip, Zap and Zoom.

No pricing on the Scorpio-N has been released yet but considering it is smaller than the flagship XUV700, we can expect it to go up against models like the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sorento and Nissan X-Trail.
