The special Subaru restomod; the 22B based Prodrive P25

With so many wonders being ushered into the world for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, we can finally get a better look at the Prodrive P25. The completely overhauled Subaru 22B comes with plenty of carbon fibre and a half a million pound sticker price.

Before you get excited by this rally icon, Prodrive has confirmed that each of their Prodrive P25 models has now been sold to 25 fortunate members of the public that have a wallet big enough to fulfil the 90s rally nostalgia.

If you are wondering why a Japanese model from 30 years ago has been dug up from the past to form the basis of the Prodrive restomod, it might be worth knowing that the 22B was a limited run of 424 models to celebrate Subaru’s rallying success of the era with an even higher performance version of the already high performance STI.

Thus, Prodrive will start the P25 project with an original two-door Subaru Impreza chassis and clad it with a significant amount of carbon fibre. How significant? Well, just about every exterior panel is a carbon composite. This is a theme that carries through to the interior where weight saving is a focal point for the model.

The end result is a Prodrive P25 that weighs in at only 1 2000 kg. Not a big deal until you look at its 2,5-litre boxer four cylinder output. It’s good for 298 kW and channels all of it through a six-speed sequential box onto all four wheels with the help of paddle shifters. It can sprint to 100 km/h in only 3,5 seconds, quite a bit quicker than the 206 kW from the original 2,2-litre.

To make this P25 as capable in corners as it is with acceleration are adjustable dampers with upgraded McPherson strut suspension, afterall, the original is almost 3 decades old. Stopping power is upgraded too, with six-piston calipers up front concealed behind the period and competition-correct 19-inch Prodrive wheels.

All of the upgrades mean that it paced up the Goodwood hillclimb in a rather rapid fashion, bringing a sense of nostalgia to rally lovers of the 1990s.
