The Fusilier relies on the DNA of its Grenadier stablemate, although it features a slightly different exterior design. The characteristic round headlights are retained and flank a revised front grille underscored by a redesigned front bumper. Body colour-matched wheel arches and a bespoke roof rail system are further distinguishers of the Fusilier’s design. The new model will be slightly shorter in length and lower in height compared to its Grenadier counterpart. For some context, the Grenadier 3.0T station wagon is 4 855 mm in length and 2 050 mm in height.
“As we developed this vehicle, we quickly concluded that in order to move towards decarbonisation but continue making cars that consumers want to drive, we need a mix of powertrain technologies.” – Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman of Ineos.
The Fusilier will be founded on a bespoke skateboard platform, which features a steel top hat and underbody alongside aluminium doors and closures like its bonnet. Powering the Fusilier will be either the all-electric powertrain or a low-emission range-extender electric configuration will also be employed. This system is currently being developed to cater to the needs of a variety of customers. The range-extender configuration consists of a small petrol engine that powers a generator that maintains the charge level of the battery when external charging isn’t available.
“BEVs are perfect for certain uses: shorter trips and urban deliveries, but industry and governments need to have realistic expectations around other technologies that can help accelerate the necessary pace of change. That is the reason we are offering an additional powertrain for the Fusilier, one that dramatically reduces emissions but has the range and refuelling capabilities needed.” – Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman of INEOS.
The Fusilier is the collaborative result of the partnership between Ineos and Magna Steyr. Ineos has mentioned that further details regarding the powertrain specs and the launch dates for the new model will be made available later this year.
