Less than a month following the local launch of the Emzoom, GAC Motor debuted the slightly larger Emkoo model at its brand evening in Johannesburg. The function brought media, dealers and other industry affiliates to get a better understanding of what GAC Motor is and how the Salvador Caetano Group is handling its distribution. The presentation included some background for the GAC Motor group, which is the fifth largest automotive producer in China and currently holds China’s Brand Quality and Service Awards.

More importantly, by the close of 2024 the group plans to have 20 dealers established across the country with aspirations of doubling this number by the close of 2026. The Emkoo and recently tested Emzoom will be critical in this success, spearheading a market charge until other models from a comprehensive portfolio are greenlit for the market. Thus, the second model in GAC’s local lineup has arrived and is open to the public for purchase. The powertrain has been carried over from its smaller Emkoo sibling, which means the 1.5-litre turbocharged motor is good for 130 kW and 270 N.m. This is all chanelled through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission to the front wheels and claimed fuel consumption is listed at 6.4 L/100 km.

Like the Emzoom, this is handsomely equipped with safety and tech features. Inside both Executive and Executive Plus derivatives include a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a surround-view camera, a glass roof with a built in electric sunshade and a keyless start system. It is further equipped on the safety front with adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, autonomous emergency braking, forward collisionwarning, traffic sign recognition system, lane keep assist and lane departure warning to name a few. Moving up to the range topper, 18-inch wheels are ditched in favour of a design a size larger, while the interior receives a wireless charger and an electric tailgate. The model also boasts a self park function, heads up display and heated and vented front seats.
