Billed as the toughest LEGO Technic challenge to date, McLaren Automotive, in collaboration with the LEGO Group, has created a one-of-a-kind life-sized — and fully drivable — McLaren P1. However, as challenging as it may be to build a 1:1-scale replica of the British marque’s revered hypercar from a whopping 342 817 LEGO Technic pieces, the real challenge lay in completing an actual lap with it. And that’s just what the Woking-based brand did. The circuit — Silverstone. The driver — Lando Norris. (You can watch Lando tackling the 5.891 km track here.)

But just what did it take to design and actually build a life-sized P1? Well, the replica was brought to life by a group comprising 23 specialists from McLaren Automotive and the LEGO Group. The development and construction process took a total of 8 334 hours. That’s 347 days! In addition, assembling the 1 220 kg LEGO-built P1 required 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements.

“Having worked on the original P1 programme for McLaren, it’s amazing to see so many of the elements from the original McLaren P1 brought to life so realistically by the LEGO Technic team for the full-scale model. The car was an icon of its time. I hope that through this collaboration with the LEGO Group, we are able to inspire the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation,” said Ben Gulliver, Test & Development Director, McLaren Automotive.

As a reminder, if you don’t have the time (or funds, for that matter; building a 1:1-scale replica will undoubtedly be expensive) to create your own life-sized LEGO P1, LEGO does offer a 1:8-scale version comprising 3 893 pieces. This model is priced at R8 499.
