The Tasman is fast approaching a mass production reality for Kia, and as part of development, the South Korean automaker has taken its bakkie for a scorching desert endurance test to ensure it can handle some of the most unforgiving terrain in the world.

Testing continues for Tasman, with the Kia team now taking the bakkie to Al Qudra in the United Arab Emirates to understand the vehicle’s capabilities and endurance in the sweltering heat. The body-on-frame model still wears the previously used camo which conceals most of the aesthetics but by now, there is a full sense of the overall silhouette and some key details, like the squared-off wheel arches and plastic cladding. Up front, the vertical oriented headlights make their presence known and there are also steps in the corners of the rear bumper for easy accessibility into the cargo bed.

The South Korean automaker has performed thousands of tests on the bakkie to ensure it will arrive to market as a competent and durable offering that will rival the likes of the Ranger, Hilux and D-Max. There is still a mist of secrecy surrounding what will propel the model forward but all initial reports point towards the 2.2-litre turbodiesel from the Sorento being shoehorned into the front end. It is expected to be able to tow and have payloads similar to the mainstream titles but at this point any additional derivatives to the double cab are not known.

Sources within the South Korean Maeil Business Newspaper (Maekyung or MK) further add that the Tasman will be offered in the Middle East, Africa, and Australia with the global premier set next month at the Jeddah International Motor Show. For now, Kia South Africa has still not alluded to this rumour of whether it will be offered on the African continent – more is expected closer to its launch at the end of October.
