Volkswagen Debuts Refreshed Taos Moniker but Not for SA

Volkswagen has introduced a refreshed version of its Taos subcompact SUV for 2025, aimed at the North American market. Here’s all you need to know about the vehicle.

Built in Mexico, the updated Taos comes with a fresh design and more power, reinforcing its position as a key model for Volkswagen in the U.S., where it’s been a strong seller since its 2021 debut. However, despite its popularity abroad, Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed that the Taos will not be offered locally.

The exterior updates bring the 2025 Taos in line with Volkswagen’s newer design language, particularly its electric models like the ID.4. The front end now features an optional full-width light bar that connects the headlights, paired with a redesigned bumper. Standard LED headlights are now offered across the range, and higher trims come with adaptive front lighting. At the rear, an illuminated VW badge ties the taillights together for a more modern, unified look.

Inside, Volkswagen has updated the cabin with new materials and a redesigned dashboard to create a cleaner, more upscale atmosphere. All models now come with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while higher trims, such as the SE, include a touch control panel for additional convenience. Customers can also choose from new interior colour options to further personalize their vehicles.

For 2025, the Taos is available in three new exterior colours—Bright Moss Green, Monterey Blue Pearl, and Monument Grey. Wheel options range from 17 to 19 inches, giving buyers more variety in customization. The SE Black trim, introduced in the previous model year, remains in the lineup alongside the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, though base models continue to drive the front wheels only.

The 2025 Taos also gains a boost in performance, thanks to updates to its 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Now producing 130 kW, up from 118 kW, the engine benefits from internal tweaks and a new intercooler. Volkswagen has also replaced the previous seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a more traditional eight-speed automatic for 4Motion models, Volkswagen mentioned that this enhances overall drivability.

While the Taos continues to be a crucial player in Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup, its absence from the South African market has been confirmed again. Nonetheless, the 2025 Taos brings a solid mix of style, performance, and affordability to the competitive subcompact SUV segment in North America.
