Durban Metro Police Levels Up with 50 New VW Golf GTIs

The Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) has bolstered its fleet with 50 brand-new Volkswagen Golf GTIs, along with a selection of Isuzu bakkies and Ford Rangers. This acquisition, announced over the weekend, aims to enhance the department’s response time and efficiency in serving the local community.

Volkswagen South Afrca will have an anomaly to report for their monthly Golf sales in September after the coastal city acquired a substantial amount of the high-performance hot hatch. According to the DMPS, these potent vehicles will improve their ability to keep the streets of Durban safe. “With this new fleet, we are better equipped to respond swiftly when duty calls,” the service noted. The addition of more capable vehicles, such as the Golf GTI, forms part of their efforts to provide enhanced public safety.

The current Golf 8 GTI, introduced to South Africa in 2021, is fitted with the familiar EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 180 kW and 370 N.m. This model can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h, making it a potent choice for rapid response situations. However, the decision to acquire the GTIs sparked criticism, with many questioning the use of taxpayer money to purchase such high-end vehicles. Some suggested that more affordable options would have sufficed for the task at hand.

Responding to the concerns, DMPS assured the public that the vehicles would only be used for official purposes. “These vehicles are strictly for official duties, not for personal use like shopping or family outings,” the department stated in a social media post, adding that any misuse would be reported. Despite the backlash, DMPS remains committed to improving its fleet with capable vehicles to enhance safety and community protection in the Durban area.
